Reconstitution of the NESC

The National Economic and Social Council was reconstituted on the 11th February 2011. As per Section 6 of the NESC Act 2001, 23 members have been appointed to hold office for a period of three years starting March 2011 to February 2014.


The Composition of the NESC was published in the Mauritius Government Gazette on the 26th February 2011.

 
First Meeting of the Council

The newly constituted Council held its first meeting on Monday, 07th March 2011 at the seat of the NESC, 10th Floor, Victoria House, Port-Louis.


At the first meeting of the Council and in accordance with Sections 6 & 11 of the NESC Act 2001, the Council has unanimously elected its Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and three Commissioners.

 
Constitution of Commissions

According to Section 11 of the NESC Act 2001, necessary steps have been taken for the constitution of three Commissions. Each Commission consists of not less than 8 and not more than 12 members taking into account their expertise in the appropriate field.

 
Consultations with the President, the Prime Minister and the leader of Opposition

As per the NESC Act 2001, the Chairperson of the NESC has written to the President, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition to pay a courtesy call on them and to discuss any matter that they may wish to raise with respect to the general orientation of the work of the NESC.

 
International Affiliations

With regard to its international commitments, foreign Economic and Social Councils have been informed of the newly constituted Council and its elected members. The International Association of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (AICESIS), which was inaugurated in Mauritius on 1-2 July 1999 and of which the NESC is a member, has also been informed. To this respect, the NESC has been invited to participate at the next General Assembly of AICESIS to be held on 21 to 23 July 2011 in Rome.

 
Commission for Infrastructure, Physical resources, Environment & Sustainable Development

A meeting of the Commission for Infrastructure, Physical Resources, Environment and Sustainable Development was organised on Friday, 25th March 2011 and members have decided to have a special working session with a wide range of stakeholders on “Moving towards a greener Mauritius”.  The objective of the study will be basically to:

  • take stock of existing plans and policies of government for improving the environment and maintaining a proper ecological balance;
